The latest incident was the hacking of the Ukrainian Defence Ministry by Russian hackers. But a new hacker attack on Ukraine was underway last week. The hack found its way to Ukrainian governmental entities and the Electoral Commission of Ukraine on December 23, 2017. Yesterday, December 30, 2017, this hack was added to a new problem for Ukraine. According to the Ukrainian Fire Corps, a major city in the Kherson Oblast had been destroyed by fires. Where is Kherson? Kherson is the first major Ukrainian city to fall as Russian troops continue their bombing campaign. Kherson is located in the south near Odesa and Dnipropetrovsk.

Kherson, the third-largest city in Ukraine, is situated less than 100 miles to the east of Crimea, which has now become part of Russia. The strategic city on the Black Sea coast is close to the Russian border and also borders Russian-occupied Crimea. Kherson is a resort city in southern Ukraine. It is an administrative center of the Kherson Oblast situated close to the juncture of the Dnieper River to the Rus’ Sea. And it is located in a very strategic geographical location, right in the middle of Ukraine and the fastest path to Crimea. I am sure there are many of you who have never heard about Kherson city before.
What Happened To Kherson?
It is the closest one to my hometown and in addition, I spent 6 months there during my internship program. Since then I keep been passionate about knowing more. As Ukraine continues to take on Russian-backed separatists in its eastern regions, the Russian military has stepped up its offensive in Ukraine’s south. Several cities in the country’s south have been under attack by heavy artillery. The latest target is Kherson, a major industrial city. This has led to a humanitarian crisis; the city suffers from water shortages and power cuts, as well as overcrowding in hospitals and schools. The ongoing shortage of basic resources such as food, fuel, and medicines has brought the whole country to a standstill and forced many to leave their homes.
